Seedlings: Fables from the Forest Children’s Book Review

Our family loves a vast variety of books and reading material, from comic books to pamphlets to encyclopedias to lengthy novels (not to mention the backs of cereal boxes and the instruction manuals for LEGOs).  We especially enjoy our reading selections when they connect us back to the truths within the scriptures.  Seedlings:  Fables from the Forest by CD Baker, is a children’s book of fables that focuses on the power of gratitude, forgiveness, humility, selflessness, and kindness through the lives and decisions of five talking trees and their friends: Blue Spruce, Shady Maple, Proud Poplar, Slope-Oak, and Garden Beech.  Each fable contains a scripture reference and questions that help children to apply the story and character trait to their own lives.
Our family has enjoyed this little book immensely!  These wonderful stories seem to bring a whole new world of nature and thought to the hearts and minds of our children. The boys have asked me to read it multiple times; the thoughtful discussions we’ve had as a result are just precious!

CD Baker also has a fact-based book on the Magna Carta called Swords of Heaven, and a book set during the American Revolution (The List), and a trilogy on The Crusades, meant for older students and adults. I haven’t determined if any of these will be a read aloud for our family [they are lengthy and we already have a pretty involved reading plan this year] or if it will just be my own personal reading selection, but I hope to find the time to read it over the coming school year. The first book, The Crusade of Tears, focuses on the Children’s Crusade, which is often overlooked in literature.  I’m looking forward to reading it!
