Georgia’s Stone Mountain { 50 States}

Before Mount Rushmore, there was Stone Mountain.

Located near Atlanta, Georgia, Stone Mountain is the largest exposed granite face in the world and depicts a carving of three Confederate heroes of the Civil War: President Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and General Thomas J. “Stonewall” Jackson. The carved surface measures three acres, larger than a football field.

After taking the Summit Skyride cable car up to the top of Stone Mountain, you can spend an entire afternoon hiking back down the mountain (with your cousin, if your extended family happens to meet you there).

Several activities are available, including miniature golf, which is a family favorite.  (Is it just me, or do our children always look like they’re playing street hockey when they play a little putt-putt?)

Click here for other activities that can be pursued while at Stone Mountain Park.  There’s also a museum in the park where you can learn a bit about the construction of Stone Mountain.

While you’re there, be sure to stay for the laser light show that occurs just after dusk. Click here for an interactive map of Stone Mountain Park.

What are your favorite places to visit in Georgia?

50-States-Before-They-Graduate

Our family aims to visit all 50 states together before our boys graduate from high school.  To take a look at some of the places we’ve been, visit our Traveling America posts.  If you’d like to offer suggestions for places to visit in the 50 states, we would love your input!  Feel free to leave your comments and suggestions for your favorite state(s), or virtually visit the other states we’ve visited to offer your recommendations on those pages!  We’d love to read about your own family’s adventures… or to simply know about destinations you’ve enjoyed!
