These resources should correlate with both 4th and 5th Edition of the Foundations Guide. If you find any discrepancies, please hop down to the comments to let us know! The links can be found on our Cycle 2 Resources Page, organized according to subject. Click here for other weeks.
For a reading/curriculum plan that overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 2 – with an integrated study of world history/geography, science, and fine arts, check out our Mission: Faith Forgers Curriculum Plan. This study will feature the work of missionaries during the Industrial Age, World Wars, and communism in Eastern Europe and Asia. It’s a powerful and meaningful way to make connections that point back to God’s work even in the midst of wickedness!
Note: Although Mission: Faith Forgers is not directly correlated to the memory work, it includes a more complete study of astronomy, physical science, and history. The books selected for this reading plan were chosen as long-term resources for students to use when they embark on research and world geography memorization in grades 7+. This study has been designed to be used independently of Classical Conversations®. For families who use Classical Conversations®, the readings assigned in the Mission: Faith Forgers study overlaps much of the memory work studied during Cycle 2 but is not correlated week by week. This provides an opportunity for ongoing review and integration of the memory work throughout the year.
Please do not think that we do everything on this list (not even the things listed in the “practicing memory work” section!)! Our reality has been filled with real things that have interfered with our schedule (like illness). Please give yourself freedom to do (or not do) whatever fits your family!
Practicing Memory Work
As I’ve mentioned in the past, our focus this year has been on beefing up our reading (click here for our reading plan), along with a bit of copywork and notebooking. Most of our memory work practice comes from listening to CDs in the car. However, we also try to use notebooking as another way to emphasize memory work, so here I offer a plan. [But plan does not = everyday reality].
Here is a list of various memory work practice techniques. Mix ’em up to add some variety and excitement!
Weekly notebook activities (which don’t actually happen every week):
- Latin Conjugation Match-Up File Folder Game. (Can also be used in a page protector to practice writing verb endings.)
- Latin – Keeping the Tenses Straight. (Latin tense story prompts to assist with connecting prompt with verb endings.)
- Accordion Timeline Notebook. We use our timeline notebook to visualize our timeline in the space of history.
- Bible: For 4th Edition, we simply practiced this Ephesians 6 Hand Motion Video. You might also do Ephesians 6 Copywork (KJV). For 5th Edition, you can try King Things Genesis 1 Audio on Spotify or this Mega Verses Hand Motion Video.
- Geography: Show me / tell me map locations. Trace Europe outline map.
- Optional English Grammar Review: Pronoun Match-Up Packet
- History: We use blank illustration copywork pages(There may also be copywork pages available on CC Connected.)
- Science: Blank illustration notebook page as shown in our Science Cards post. (Or student can simply write memory work in a notebook.) Also reading from the Physical Science Unit from Homeschool Curriculum Company (click here for that freebie!).
- Fine Arts: Monet Art Project: Impressionist Art Technique, Morisot Art Project: Globby Textures (or Degas Art Project: Depicting Motion if using 4th Edition), or Fine Arts notebooking pages
And… for this week:
- English Grammar: Verb Worksheet or I Spy Action Verbs
- Math: Area of a Rectangle Worksheet or Measure and calculate area of rectangles around the house
- Geography: Nation Flags Coloring Pages (younger) Ducksters Europe Geography Page (older)
- History: Homeschool in the Woods Time Travelers World War II (Copywork, Uniforms, Map)
Memory Work Review Game: Zap It! (For other games, visit our Memory Work Review Games post and link-up)
Presentation Idea: Book Review (Critique) or Demonstrate Newton’s First Law with Physics Magic
Our School Schedule (This is how we plan to study the subjects throughout the week.)
The Link Buffet: Extension Activities
Pick and choose what you wish to do! {We usually do not do much from this list, but it’s there in case we need an idea! But I also want to emphasize here that it is not necessary to supplement Classical Conversations at the Foundations Stage, aside from using a language arts and math program. Read more about that here.}
Please notify me of broken or inoperable links, and I’ll be glad to fix them! If you’d like to add a great resource to this list, feel free to contact me or leave it in the comments!
