A Less-Stress Summer School

This post may contain affiliate links that provide a commission to us if you make a purchase. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Thank you for supporting us in this way! Please see our full disclosure policy for more details.

We’ve wrapped up our year, and though we will be taking it easy this summer, there are a few things we’ll be working on so as to not go completely brain-dead this summer. In the past I’ve had better plans (like last year’s Calendar Quest study, which I highly recommend to anyone who wants a broad overview of history using something we can all relate to: the calendar), but this year with our upcoming arrival, it’s just going to be a bit loosey-goosey around here.

So… here’s the plan:

Typing Practice

Dancemat Typing and/or Typing.com.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/typing/

Math Fact Practice through Games

  • Mega-Fun Card-Game Math
  • Shut the Box
  • Xtramath.org
  • http://xtramath.org/

Geography

Seterra Software (free download or online version) (1 continent/week for Stephen)

http://www.seterra.com/

Sheppard Software (for David and Levi).  Sheppard Software has many other games, including math practice, science, and preschool to name a few!

Spelling Review

Spelling City (to review spelling words)

English Grammar: Parts of Speech review

Grammaropolis (Also available as an iPad app; Noun study is free)

http://www.grammaropolis.com/

Latin

  • Song School Latin DVD

Reading

  • Levi: Assorted picture books and Starfall
  • David: Imagination Station series, and read picture books to Levi
  • Stephen: Selections from the following (some are Challenge level books, which we’ll re-read again when he gets to Challenge), and read picture books to Levi

All:  Finish Story of the World Volume 4 audio. Listen to Sugar Creek Gang series (again. They ask to listen to this set of 36 books repeatedly.) Read selections from Book of Virtues.

Booklogs:  We choose to reward our boys for reading a specific number of books by getting them… another book! This usually is pretty exciting for them, as they really like earning the chance to get a LEGO book!

  • Our own personal book log (probably the most boring one on the world wide web, but I prefer a simple format that uses less ink!)
  • Notebooking Fairy’s Reading Log
  • K12 Reading Logs
  • ABC Teach Reading Logs

Writing

Family Fiction (primarily Stephen)

History

  • Homeschool in the Woods American Revolution Study
  • Homeschool in the Woods New World Explorers
  • Homeschool in the Woods Colonial Life

A few board games

  • 10 Days in the USA
  • Sequence States & Capitals
  • Ticket to Ride
  • Catan
    Pandemic

Many of the on-line web interactives listed above have iPad versions also available. We have some additional iPad games (like Stack the States & Stack the Countries, My Incredible Body, Brainfeed, Hooked on Phonics, etc.), but if you have some favorite apps, we’d love for you to leave a comment for us to check it out this summer!

Since it’s not usually an issue to get our children to play on-line games (and they’ve asked to do the other things listed here!), this is our plan for a less-stress summer – and a less-stress startup next school year!
